Headwear:
While there are not many official records of headwear before 3000 BC, they are expected to have been common place, as supported by the approximately 30,000 year old Venus of Willendorf figure (1). Bonnets, caps, crowns, fillets, hair covers, hats, helmets, hoods, masks, turbans, veils, wigs etc. The list goes on, as do there purposes.
Status:
Throughout history headwear has been used as a symbol of status. Headwear made it easy to identify social rank and privilege, so much so, for a period of time it was illegal for commoners to wear headwear. Consider crowns and tiaras which are worn in recognition of royal status, whereas feathered headpieces were worn by various Native American indigenous peoples representing their position and tribe.
Fashion:
Headwear is a major fashion accessory- Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl (2) is the ultimate example of this. The classic black silk top hat was formerly an indispensable portion of the suit. Females fashion hats have changed drastically over time, ranging from elaborate hats such as what adorned Marie Antoinette’s head (3), to no more than a few bits of cloth and decorations.
Religious significance:
Headwear plays a significant role in religious practice. In Judaism, men cover their heads out of reverence for God. Married Jewish females cover their hair according to the principles and halacha of tzniut. Male Sikhs are required to wear turbans, whereas Muslim women wear a Hijab (head scarf) (4). Head wear worn by the Roman Catholic clergy include a tasselled cardinal’s hat, and prior to the 1900’s Christian women were required to wear a headscarf while in Church. Buddhist priests in China wear the bao-tzu/ mao-tzu, a classic skullcap that is the most like the Jewish tradition.
