The most popular medicine was a mixture of iron oxide, red lead, onions, alabaster, honey and fat from a variety of animals including snakes, crocodiles, hippopotamuses and lions.
420 BC:
The great ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, actively searched for a cure to hair loss, namely his own hair loss. In fact he is believed to have been the first physician to surgical solutions to hair loss. One of Hippocrates conclusions was that castration would be the ultimate solution to hair loss- because eunuchs never went bald!
1624 AC:
Wigs became extremely popular in France when King Louis XIII began wearing a full wig to cover his thinning hair and to protect himself from lice. Wigs were so expensive to make and maintain that wig thieves started to emerge who would try and rob passengers in carriages. From here they spread across the world as a symbol of upper class- until revolutions and the removal of the upper class status occurred….
Today:
Famous actors, models, influencers all wear wigs to keep up with trends and maintain certain looks. Some are impacted by hair loss but most are not. Wigs and other forms of helper hair are again a fashion accessory. In 2019 6.8 million people in the U.S. — 147 million people worldwide — are expected to be affected by alopecia, and 50% of the entire population of the world is likely to experience hair loss at some point in their life.
