Eyelashes:
Eyelashes are part of our biological evolution and something all mammals have, not just humans. Why? Their primary role is to protect our eyes. The tiny hairs on our lids serve the same function as a cat’s whiskers (believe it or not), they are sensitive to touch, providing a warning when something is near our eye, they also keep dirt, sweat, and other unwanted debris out of the way. Isn’t our body fascinating!
History and Fashion:
The obsession with long lush lashes has been around since Ancient Egypt (4000BC) as supported by the finding of eyelash enhancing tools and hydrographics. However, mascara as we know it was created in 1913 in France by Rimmel and only became popular in America when Maybelline released their first formula in 1917, which was a mixture of coal and Vaseline. The historical recipes used are pretty insane and include reference to lead sulfate, soot, soap flakes, and animal poo (although I struggle to believe this one).
If you are like me and short on eyelashes- we had our heyday back in the 1400s where it was Medieval tradition to pluck eyelashes and shave your eyebrows off. Maybe that fashion will roll around again! In the meantime check out the below solutions;
